It’s hard to keep hair shiny and healthy when you use a hair dryer, curling iron, flat iron, hair color, bleach, heat, and other styling tools and techniques that rough up your hair cuticles. It’s your cuticles that lock your hair onto your follicles. And heaven help those who mess with their follicles.

A roughed-up cuticle makes hair look dull. Smooth hair cuticles, like the shingles on the roof over your head, work best when they all neatly lie flat. Smooth cuticles are shiny because light reflects off smooth surfaces, and that’s what you want. But dry it, and curl it, and color it, and before you know it, your hair looks dull.

Here are seven steps to shiny hair:

1. Eat Right

Your hair is mainly protein, so feed it lots of protein! Eat lean meats, fish, eggs, beans, low-fat dairy products make hair healthy, and especially foods that are rich in omega-3 fatty acids: salmon, avocados, flaxseed, and almonds. Depending on how bad your hair is now, it can take six months for your new diet to start making your hair shine.

2. Clean Up

All those hair products you use—from hair spray to mousse—add residue to your hair. They’ll have to go. Instead, use a clarifying shampoo once a week or add 1 tablespoon of baking soda to 2 tablespoons of your shampoo to remove sticky residue from your hair.

Beach cover-ups range from sarongs and kaftans to a simple pair of shorts. The choice depends on your style and choice of swim wear and will complete the beach goodness look to a T. As footwear it’s the best to stick to waterproof flip-flops or sandals- once that you can easily  hose off when you ‘re done, to prevent a very sandy car and house. If you intend to wear jewellery, make sure it’s’ waterproof- unless you plan on simply staring longingly at the sea. Lastly, you will need a nice beach bag to pack everything in. My favourites are made with canvas on cane, with plenty of compartments to hold more voluble items such as phone money and keys-and stop them getting wet.

Beauty

I know I have to apply sunscreen is probably the most annoying thing when you are enjoying yourself. But I am afraid not much matches with lobster pink. Go for a higher SPF for you first few visits and once you start tanning you can lower it slightly. No oil though, that’s just asking troubles. In terms of beach make up, I like to keep it on the minimum- you can’t archive surfer chic cool if you caked in the stuff. If you really must, go for the waterproof variety. It will prevent any panda look mishaps. As lip gloss, use the one with at least SPF15 to avoid dried out smackers. Wear sunglasses-they are absolutely important . Not only they protect your eyes and the sensitive skin around them, but they just look so darn good. The variety of style is amazing, and you can match them to your swim wear, hair, and face shape and even to your eyes colour.

Hair

Make sure you pack a hat, bandana or pretty hair scarf –not only for protection against the sun, but (teamed  with stylish sunglasses) for the ultimate beach cool. A protective hair product will shield your look from UV rays and prevent dry, straw-like hair. It is also a good idea to take some leave in condition with you, which you can comb through you air after the swim. I have found this works wonders for tangles and leaves your hair soft and shiny.

Now you are all set, just don’t forget your towel- a good look or fashion mag won’t amiss either!
